Upwork's problem for engineering hires isn't the rate. It's that the platform is a marketplace, not a filter: you write the post, you sift the bids, you run the screening, you absorb it when someone goes quiet in sprint two. That's fine for a bounded task. It's expensive for anything that looks like a team member.
This compares seven alternatives on the two things that actually differ — who does the vetting, and who carries replacement risk.
Disclosure: First Bridge Consulting is one of the options here. We've placed ourselves where we fit and named where others suit you better.
TL;DR
- Upwork is genuinely good for short, well-specified, low-stakes work where you can judge the output yourself.
- It's a poor fit for ongoing engineering — no meaningful vetting, no replacement cover, and bid-based pricing that selects for availability rather than quality.
- Lemon.io and Arc are the closest upgrades: pre-vetted senior developers, fast matching, no bidding.
- Toptal sits at the premium end with real screening, at $100–200/hr for senior engineers.
- Staffing firms (us included) are the answer when you want named engineers, a replacement SLA and someone else carrying compliance — and you have internal capacity to direct the work.
Where Upwork is still the right tool
Worth saying, because "leave Upwork" is usually oversold.
For a bounded, specifiable task — a WordPress migration, a scraper, a one-off integration, a design-to-HTML conversion — Upwork is efficient and cheap. You can judge the deliverable yourself, the engagement is short enough that churn doesn't hurt, and escrow protects you.
It stops working when the engagement becomes ongoing:
- Vetting is on you. Platform badges and job-success scores measure platform behaviour, not engineering judgement.
- Bidding selects for availability. The people who bid fastest and lowest are not usually the people you want on a system that has to last.
- No replacement cover. If someone disappears mid-sprint, that's your problem, your re-ramp, and your deadline.
- Screening cost is invisible. Twenty bids at ten minutes each is over three hours before you've talked to anyone. That's not free, it's just not invoiced.
The seven alternatives
1. Lemon.io — pre-vetted seniors, fast
Pre-vetted senior developers, mostly Eastern European, screened by portfolio review and a trial week. No bidding — you get a short-list.
Best for: startups and small teams who want one good senior engineer quickly. Trade-off: narrower geography, so rare stacks take longer.
2. Arc.dev — marketplace with a filter
Vetted remote developers on freelance or full-time tracks. You post a role, Arc returns a short-list to interview, typically inside 72 hours.
Best for: you like the marketplace model but want the first filter done for you. Trade-off: vetting is lighter than the premium platforms; budget your own interview time.
3. Toptal — the premium screening option
Multi-stage screening — language, personality, technical, live problem-solving, test project. Genuinely filters, and you spend less of your own time finding that out.
Best for: short, high-stakes engagements where a bad hire costs more than the markup. Trade-off: senior engineers land around $100–200/hr. Full comparison in Toptal alternatives.
4. Gun.io — human technical interviews
Vetting via technical interviews run by people, oriented toward ongoing engagements rather than one-off tasks.
Best for: you want someone to have actually talked to the engineer about how they work. Trade-off: smaller pool than the large marketplaces.
5. Turing — scale and speed
Very large pre-screened pool matched algorithmically, with matches surfacing in 3–7 days.
Best for: volume hiring across several stacks at once. Trade-off: blended $100–200/hr, roughly half retained as platform margin, and algorithmic matching that reads technical fit better than working style. See Turing alternatives.
6. Nearshore providers — Trio, Revelo, Near, CodersLink
LATAM engineers with US-hours overlap, engaged as team members rather than task-based freelancers.
Best for: US teams doing daily-collaboration product work. Trade-off: rate sits above Asian markets; you're buying overlap.
7. Staffing firms — including us
Named engineers, contracts and compliance carried by the partner, replacement under SLA, typically no minimum headcount. Lowest rate position here.
Best for: ongoing engineering work where you want a team member rather than a task-taker, and you have someone internally who can direct it. Trade-off: honestly — this model needs internal technical direction. If nobody on your side can set priorities and review code, a staffing firm won't fix that and you should buy delivery instead. And for daily-iteration work with a US team, a nearshore provider's overlap may beat our rate.

The question that decides it
Is this a task or a team member?
A task has a specification, an acceptance test, and an end. Upwork and the marketplaces handle tasks well, and paying a staffing premium for one is waste.
A team member works on evolving requirements, inside your codebase, alongside your engineers, for months. That needs vetting you'd trust, continuity you can rely on, and someone other than you carrying the risk when it goes wrong. It's a different purchase, and treating it like a task is why so many Upwork engineering engagements end badly.
If it's a team member, the follow-up question is whether you have internal capacity to direct the work — because that determines whether you want staff augmentation or a delivery-owning engagement. Worked through in staff augmentation vs outsourcing.
What to check whichever you choose
- Named individuals, with substitution subject to your approval.
- Replacement SLA in days, not "best efforts", and who pays for the re-ramp.
- IP assignment enforceable in the contractor's jurisdiction — platform terms are not always sufficient for work-for-hire across borders.
- Total cost, not rate. Add 1.15–1.25× for same-timezone and 1.4–1.8× for distributed engagements. See contract vs full-time developer cost.
FAQ
What is the best Upwork alternative for hiring developers? For one good senior engineer quickly, Lemon.io or Arc. For high-stakes short engagements, Toptal. For ongoing team-member work with named engineers and replacement cover, a staffing firm. The right answer depends on whether you're buying a task or a team member.
Is Upwork bad for hiring developers? No — it's well suited to short, specifiable tasks you can evaluate yourself. It's a poor fit for ongoing engineering, because you do the vetting, you carry the churn, and bidding selects for availability rather than quality.
Are Upwork alternatives more expensive? On rate, usually. On total cost, often not — the screening time, mis-hire risk and re-ramp cost you absorb on Upwork are real, they just never appear on an invoice.
Which alternative has the strongest vetting? Toptal's multi-stage process is the most rigorous well-documented option among the marketplaces. Gun.io and Lemon.io use human interviews and trial weeks, which many buyers prefer to test-based screening.
Can I hire a full-time developer through these? Arc, Turing and the staffing firms all support full-time and long-term engagements. Upwork's structure is built around projects and hourly contracts, which is part of why ongoing hires sit awkwardly on it.
How fast can each option start? Arc surfaces matches in about 72 hours, Turing in 3–7 days, Lemon.io in roughly a week, staffing firms with a bench in 7–14 days. Upwork can be same-day if you accept the first credible bid — which is exactly the risk.
Hiring a team member rather than a task? First Bridge Consulting places vetted contract engineers with named individuals, a replacement SLA and no minimum headcount — and we'll tell you when a marketplace is genuinely the cheaper answer for what you're building.
